Aloha from Hawaii,

This is a modified version of
ATARI’s DOS 2.5, it has a number of
improvements that this file will
describe.

FILENAMES:
You may use “UPPER” or “lower”
case characters in filenames. You
may also use the underline “_” and
square brace “[]” characters. These
changes allow more freedom in file-
name selection, “D1:Happy_XL.[a]”
is a legal filename!

FAST WRITE:
This DOS defaults to the “FAST-
WRITE” (without verify), this saves a
lot of time, and errors are extremely
rare! You may change this by poking
1913 with 87 from BASIC and rewriting
DOS to a disk (87=verify on, 80=off).
NOTE: There is an exception to this
described in HAPPY DRIVES below!

HAPPY DRIVES:
You will notice the RAMDISK.COM
file on this disk is 20 sectors long.
This new file contains a patch for
the XL/XE operating system that will
let you access the speed of the HAPPY
enhanced disk drives! This patch sets
the FAST-BUFFERED-WRITE-WITH-VERIFY,
and allows ULTRA-SPEED SIO with the
HAPPY 1050’s (WARP-SPEED with 810’s)!
Since this patch is for the O/S, it
does NOT affect the FORMAT or WRITE-
DOS commands (you may write this DOS
to ANY (Atari) DOS disk, without re-
formatting, unlike HAPPY’s WARP-DOS!)
NOTE: These features are available in
Single AND Enhanced (1050) density!
(sorry, no Double-Density with 2.5+)
This file also sets-up a very fast
keyboard (more on this later…).

RAMDISK:
There are 3 RAMDISK files…
“RAMDISK.XE” is the file I described
under HAPPY DRIVES, it is also the
file I used for RAMDISK.COM. There
is one other feature of this file I
forgot to mention… If you have a
favorite character set (font), and
you name it FONT.SYS, it will load
in place of the default O/S set and
become the default for use while
using DOS 2.5+! (NOTE: This must be
a standard 1024-byte font set!)

“RAMDISK.XL” is a special file for XL
owners that will set up a 105 sector
DOS 2.5 ramdisk under the O/S! This
will work with the 800XL/1200XL/65XE
or 64K 600XL! This file will write
DUP.SYS to the D8:RAMDISK, but, to
save space, it does NOT automatically
set-up MEM.SAV (you may do this from
DOS with option “N”). NOTE: Do not
reformat D8: from DOS (use delete *.*
instead) or you will get the wrong
(499) free-sector count!

“RAMDISK.CM” is the original ATARI
DOS 2.5 ramdisk file.

COMPATIBLITY:
This DOS is 100% compatible with
ATARI DOS 2.0S and 2.5, provided none
of the special filename characters
have been used, if special characters
have been used you will have to re-
name the file before ATARI DOS can
access them!
This DOS is also compatible with
SMART-DOS and OSS DOS’s in Single-
Density (S/D). TOPDOS and MYDOS
disks can also be used, if S/D, AND
“A” (ATARI) formatted!

O/S COMPATIBLITY:
The HappyXL patch is intelligent,
it checks the O/S while loading, and
repositions itself in memory for the
Rev.1 (1200XL) or Rev.2 (XL/XE) O/S!

MEMORY:
Try booting normal DOS 2.5 (with
it’s RamDisk) to BASIC, and check
FRE(0)… Then boot 2.5+ to BASIC,
and you will have the SAME FRE(0)!
All these extras, and it didn’t cost
you a single byte!

FAST KEYBOARD:
HappyXL also sets a fast keyboard
repeat and delay that gives you a 1/3
second delay, and 30 characters-per-
second! It’s great for cursor control
while editing!!!

HAPPYXL.V1C:
If you want the HAPPY speed, but
not the ramdisk, you can copy the
HAPPYXL.V1C file over RAMDISK.COM!
The HAPPYXL.V1C file can also be used
with other DOS’s, just make it the
1st AUTORUN file on the disk (you may
append other files to HappyXL!).

OTHER FILES:
“RS232.SYS” is ATARI’s loader for
the 850 handler. (AUTORUN.SYS file!)
